RUHS Jazz Auditions
Hello, and thank you for your interest in participation with the RUHS Jazz program.
**PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END**
If you are somewhat competent on your instrument, and not just a beginner, we will most likely have a spot for you in the jazz program! Your audition is necessary to get you into the right level ensemble. Incoming freshman should also be enrolled in concert and/or marching band for relevant instruments.
Auditions will be via video through Flipgrid. You may try it as many times as you like but you may only submit one audition per instrument. One additional video is allowed if you wish to submit an example of your jazz improv soloing. Improvisation is optional.
You may submit more than one audition if you play multiple instruments. (Saxes, only submit for the instrument you play best, but let us know if you play others).
Wind Instruments
Your audition will consist of any SWING etude from this year’s All-State Jazz etudes (2024 set 3). Select the one that shows your playing in the best light.
You may submit a second video showing your jazz improv using the track provided here. You may download it and practice with it. If you decide to upload an improv audition, please be aware that we need to be able to hear you AND the accompaniment track.
Piano
Your audition will consist of your choice of etude 1 or 2 (swing) from this year’s All-State Jazz etudes (2024 set 3). Select the one that shows your playing in the best light.
You may submit a second video showing your jazz improv using the track provided here. You may download it and practice with it. If you decide to upload an improv audition, please be aware that we need to be able to hear you AND the accompaniment track.

Bass
Your audition will consist of etude 1 AND 2 from this year’s All-State Jazz etudes (2024 set 3).
These two etudes should be done in one take. Play one, wait a few seconds and play the second one.

Guitar
